Ever' now and again good folk get to doin' bad things. That’s just how it is. And that’s how it came to be with a young preacher named Ford Spratly. He shoved his huntin’ knife in his best friend Mazer’s heart one hot evening under the Barley Moon.

There was a girl involved. And corn liquor, too. But you probably guessed as much.

Sovereign knows I’m not judgin’ young Spratly, but the murder left Spratly a bitter shepherd to the folk of Barley Corner. It likewise put Mazer’s ghost to walkin’ the cornfield lookin’ for what somethin’ he lost. And the girl, Hestor Daylily, well, you might oughta set yourself down, ‘cause this tale is gonna take some tellin’.
